The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community located in the city of Pondicherry (Puducherry), India. It was founded by Sri Aurobindo, an influential Indian philosopher, yogi, and nationalist, and his spiritual collaborator, known as The Mother (Mirra Alfassa). The ashram is dedicated to the practice of Integral Yoga and the pursuit of spiritual growth and transformation.
Sri Aurobindo, a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, retired from public life in 1910 and settled in Pondicherry. Over time, a community formed around him, and in 1926, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram was officially established. Sri Aurobindo emphasized the concept of integral yoga, which seeks to integrate all aspects of human existence, including the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions, leading to a transformation of consciousness and a realization of the divine within.
The ashram serves as a center for spiritual practice, education, and the study of Sri Aurobindo’s teachings. It consists of various departments and units that cater to different aspects of ashram life. These include the main ashram building, where the samadhi (final resting place) of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother is located, as well as guest houses, libraries, art galleries, workshops, and educational facilities.
